GLP-1 and Oral Health

Medications like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, and other GLP-1 drugs have transformed the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. While these medications can provide significant health benefits, many users are discovering an unexpected side effect that has become known as “Ozempic Mouth.”

Although “Ozempic Mouth” is not an official medical diagnosis, the term describes a collection of oral symptoms that some patients experience while taking these medications. Common complaints include dry mouth, bad breath, altered taste, increased tooth sensitivity, and a higher risk of cavities. Some people also notice changes in the appearance of their face due to rapid weight loss, which can make the mouth appear more aged.

One reason these symptoms occur is that GLP-1 medications can reduce saliva production and increase the risk of dehydration. Saliva plays a vital role in protecting teeth by neutralizing acids, washing away bacteria, and strengthening tooth enamel. When saliva decreases, the risk of tooth decay and gum disease rises.

The good news is that these effects can often be managed. Staying well hydrated, practicing excellent oral hygiene, using fluoride products, and visiting your dentist regularly can help keep your smile healthy while benefiting from these medications. If you’re taking a GLP-1 medication, let your dental team know so they can provide personalized recommendations to protect your oral health.
