Dental FAQs

How often should I brush and floss?

Most dentists recommend brushing twice daily and flossing once daily. People ask this to confirm they’re maintaining proper oral hygiene habits.

How often should I visit the dentist?

The standard advice is every 6 months for a checkup and cleaning, though some patients may need more frequent visits depending on their oral health.

Why do my gums bleed when I brush or floss?

Bleeding gums can signal gingivitis or early gum disease, and patients often worry it’s something serious.

What’s the best toothpaste to use?

Dentists typically recommend a fluoride toothpaste, but patients often ask about specialized options like whitening, sensitivity, or natural products.

How can I whiten my teeth safely?

Teeth whitening is a very popular topic, and people want to know the safest and most effective options (professional treatments vs. over-the-counter kits).

Why do my teeth hurt or feel sensitive?

Sensitivity can be caused by enamel wear, cavities, gum recession, or exposed roots, so patients frequently ask about the reason and treatment.

Do I have any cavities?

This is a top concern at checkups—patients want to know if they need fillings or other treatment.

How often should I see the dentist?

Children, teens, and adults should all see us for a regular checkup at least once every six months. Patients who are at a greater risk for oral cancer or gum disease may be required to come in more than just twice a year. Dr. Marie and Dr. Dennis Stiles or Dr. Elizabeth Wilcox will help determine how often you should visit our office for regular checkups.

What causes bad breath, and how can I fix it?

Chronic bad breath (halitosis) can stem from poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, or underlying dental issues, making it a common concern.

Are dental X-rays safe?/

Patients often worry about radiation exposure, and dentists explain that modern X-rays use very low levels of radiation and are considered safe.

What are my options for fixing damaged or missing teeth?

This includes questions about fillings, crowns, implants, bridges, or dentures, especially when patients have visible or painful dental issues.

When should I change my toothbrush?

Your toothbrush will eventually wear out, especially if you are brushing your teeth twice a day for two to three minutes each time. We recommend that adults and children change their toothbrush every three months. If you are using an electric toothbrush, be sure to read the directions because you may not need to change toothbrush heads as frequently.

Patients with gum disease are encouraged to change their toothbrush every four to six weeks to keep any bacteria from spreading. After brushing, rinse your toothbrush with hot water to kill germs and keep the bristles clean. If you’ve been sick, be sure to change your toothbrush as soon as possible.

If I have braces, do I still need dental checkups every six months?

Yes! In fact, it’s even more important that patients receiving orthodontic treatment visit us regularly. With braces, food may be caught in places your toothbrush can’t reach. This causes bacteria to build up and can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Our team will work closely with your orthodontist to make sure your teeth stay clean and healthy while you’re wearing braces.
