Your Bite Matters

A stable bite is essential for maintaining the health and function of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and preventing temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The bite, or occlusion, refers to how the upper and lower teeth come together when the jaws close. When the bite is well-aligned, the forces of chewing and speaking are evenly distributed across the teeth, muscles, and joints. This balance allows the TMJ to function smoothly and without strain.

However, when the bite is unstable—due to factors such as tooth wear, missing teeth, misalignment, or uneven dental restorations—the jaw muscles must work harder to compensate. Over time, this imbalance can lead to muscle fatigue, inflammation, joint clicking or popping, headaches, and facial pain, all common symptoms of TMD. Additionally, chronic instability in the bite can cause progressive damage to the teeth and jaw joint, creating a cycle of dysfunction and discomfort.

Maintaining a stable bite through regular dental evaluations, occlusal adjustments, and appropriate restorative care supports optimal jaw alignment and muscle harmony. By ensuring proper occlusal balance, dentists help protect patients from TMD and preserve both comfort and long-term oral health.
